The
Blackwater River, in British Columbia, is home to some
of the best dry fly fishing for wild native rainbows anywhere.
These aggressive Blackwater trout take drys on the surface consistently.
Caddis and stonefly hatches are frequent; we use large flies,
6 to 10 size.
Most
often, we fly to the river after breakfast with or without
a guide, wade and fish until afternoon, then return to the
lodge in time for dinner. When water levels permit, we fly
into one of the better sections of the river and float with
a pontoon raft and fish many great runs, being picked up
at the end of the day by the float plane and returning to
the lodge comforts. Catches of 50 trout are common, with
a majority in the 1.5 pound range; some go up to 4 pounds.
Regulations are barbless hooks, flies only. Our guides favorite
dry flies are Elk Hair Caddis, Stimulator, and Royal Wullf
in sizes 8 to 14. Madam X in size 6 & 4 is good during stonefly
hatch. Most common rods used are 3 to 6 weight.
